Starting a Lawn From Bare Dirt

Hydroseed lawns are the bulk of our residential work in San Diego. The usual starting point is a bare yard: a new house where the builder left graded dirt, a remodel that tore out the old turf, or a lawn that browned out during a dry year and never came back. The owner wants grass, does not want to pay for sod, and has tried broadcasting seed before and watched the birds eat it. A hydroseed lawn solves most of that. Water, wood fiber mulch, seed, fertilizer and a tackifier go into one tank and come out in a single pass, so the seed sits in a moist, protected layer from the first day.

What actually goes on the ground

Angi describes the slurry as grass seed, mulch, fertilizer, tackifier to help the mix stick, water, and sometimes a green colorant so the crew can see coverage. That green tint is why a fresh hydroseed lawn looks painted. It fades within days. Under good conditions HomeGuide and University of Nebraska Extension both put first sprouts at about 5 to 7 days; Angi gives a wider 7 to 14. Expect the first mow somewhere in weeks four through six, when the grass reaches roughly four inches. In San Diego, coastal yards under the marine layer tend toward the slower end of that range in late spring and the faster end in fall, while warm inland yards come up quickly as long as the surface never dries out.

Picking the grass

UC's lawn guide names six species as best adapted to most of California. For grass seeding here, the real choice is usually between two of them. Tall fescue is a cool-season grass with moderate to high heat tolerance and moderate drought tolerance; it stays green through most of the year and is the default for a family lawn with some shade. Bermudagrass is warm-season, rated high for heat, drought and wear, and is the better fit for a full-sun inland yard, a dog run or a play area that takes a beating. Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass and red fescue have low heat tolerance on their own, so we use them only in blends, mostly near the coast. St. Augustinegrass, common in older San Diego lawns, is planted from sod or stolons, not seed, so if you are set on it, hydroseed is the wrong tool and we will tell you.

Soil prep decides most of the result

Most of the effort on a lawn job happens before the hydroseed truck shows up. Builder-graded yards are often compacted fill, and on the clay subsoils common on San Diego's old marine terraces, that fill can be close to impervious. We rip or till the surface, remove rock and construction debris, set the finish grade so runoff heads away from the foundation, and add topsoil where the existing dirt is thin or sterile. In decomposed granite areas inland, the issue is the opposite: the soil drains so fast that seed dries out, so a little organic material and a heavier mulch rate help. We also check the sprinklers. A hydroseed lawn with a dry corner because one head is clogged will show that corner for months.

Watering through establishment

University of Nebraska Extension calls for watering new hydroseed a minimum of two or three times daily when it is warm, and Iowa State Extension says two light waterings a day is usually enough unless it is hot and windy, with up to four on the worst days, continued for about three weeks. In San Diego terms, that means short cycles that wet the mulch without making puddles, especially on clay. When a Santa Ana is forecast, add a midday cycle until it passes. Once the grass is up and mowed a couple of times, we taper to deeper, less frequent watering so the roots chase moisture down. You get the schedule in writing, adjusted for whether you are on the coast or inland.

Hydroseeding cost for a home lawn

Depending on the source, published national ranges for hydroseeding cost span roughly $0.07 to $0.35 a square foot. HomeGuide's 5,000 square foot example lands at $1,000 to $1,750, and both HomeGuide and LawnStarter say most hydroseeding companies have a minimum job charge of around $300 to $500. Steep areas cost more: HomeGuide adds $0.05 to $0.10 a square foot for slopes. What moves a San Diego price most is the prep. A clean, graded yard with working sprinklers costs far less to seed than a compacted lot that needs ripping, topsoil and irrigation repairs first.

Lawn repair and overseeding

Not every job is bare dirt. Plenty of San Diego lawns are thin, patchy or full of weeds after a dry summer, and they do not need a full lawn renovation. For those we overseed: mow low, aerate or scratch the surface, and spray seed and mulch over the existing turf so it fills in. Lawn Love's overseeding range is 7 to 23 cents a square foot. It works best in fall for tall fescue lawns. If the lawn is more than roughly half gone, or it is mostly weeds, a full renovation with new seed is usually the better spend.

Hydroseed Lawns Questions

What does hydroseeding cost for a San Diego yard?

For a 5,000 square foot lawn HomeGuide's range is $1,000 to $1,750, and its overall figure is 12 to 35 cents a square foot; other national guides run lower. Most hydroseeding companies also charge a minimum of around $300 to $500. The prep your yard needs is the biggest variable, so we quote once we have seen it.

How long does a hydroseed lawn take to fill in?

Sprouts usually show in 5 to 14 days, the first mow comes at four to six weeks, and the lawn generally looks full after a couple of months of steady watering and mowing.

Which grass should I hydroseed in San Diego?

Tall fescue for a year-round green lawn with some shade; Bermudagrass for full sun, heat and heavy wear. Near the coast a fescue blend with some ryegrass or bluegrass can work. St. Augustinegrass is not seeded.

Can you hydroseed over my existing lawn?

Yes, as overseeding. We mow low and open the surface so seed reaches soil, then spray. If the lawn is mostly dead or weeds, a full renovation gives a better result.

Do I need sprinklers before you hydroseed?

In San Diego, yes, unless you plan to hand water several times a day. From May through September there is almost no rain, and even in winter storms are too far apart to carry new seed.
