Seeding Ground That Gets Ten Inches of Rain

Hydroseeding San Diego sprays new lawns, covers canyon slopes, installs silt fence and sediment controls, and handles the grading and topsoil prep that has to happen before any seed goes down. We work for homeowners, builders, HOAs and property managers in the City of San Diego and the towns around it, from Oceanside and Escondido down to Chula Vista and Imperial Beach.

This is a hard place to grow grass from seed, and an easy place to get it wrong. The airport's 1991 to 2020 normals put the year's rain at under 10 inches, and almost none of it falls from May through September. The city sits on mesas split by roughly 200 canyons, so a lot of yards end in a slope that sheds water the moment a winter storm arrives. Soils swing from slow-draining clay on the old marine terraces to loose decomposed granite on the inland hills. A seed mix and watering plan that works in Point Loma can fail in Santee.

So we start every job by looking at the ground, not by quoting a square-foot number over the phone.

How we work

  • We walk the site, check the soil, the slope and the sprinklers, and ask how the area gets used
  • You get a written estimate that separates prep, seeding, erosion control and any grading
  • We pick the seed: tall fescue, Bermudagrass, a blend, or a native mix for slopes, based on sun, heat and how much you want to water
  • Soil prep comes first: rough and fine grading, topsoil where it is thin, and breaking up compacted fill
  • Slopes get heavier mulch, tackifier, blankets or a bonded fiber matrix, and silt fence or fiber rolls at the toe when water would carry soil off the lot
  • After seeding you get a watering schedule for your microclimate, plus what to expect at one, three and six weeks
  • If a hard storm washes out a section, call us and we will come look at it

We do not pretend hydroseed is right for every yard. If sod or a native planting is the better fit, we will say so on the visit.
