Grass That Has to Handle the Heat
Hydroseeding in Escondido is mostly a question of heat and timing. The city sits at about 646 feet, inland from the coastal marine layer, and average daily highs run 87 degrees in July and 89 in August. The record is 115 degrees, set on September 6, 2020. A lawn seeded in early summer here faces a hard first season, so we steer most clients toward fall or late winter seeding.
Rainfall that will not sit still
Escondido averages around 15 inches of precipitation a year, but the range is wide. The rain year from July 2013 to June 2014 brought only 5.75 inches, while 1940 to 1941 brought 31.73. More than 80 percent falls from November through March. That spread is why we never count on rain to establish a lawn. Irrigation goes in or gets checked first, and rain is a bonus.
Hills on three sides
The flat ground is around downtown, with hilly areas to the north, southeast and southwest. Hillside homes often have a cut slope behind the house and a fill slope below it. Fill slopes are the ones that slump and gully. We lock them down with pinned blankets or a sprayed bonded fiber layer and add a silt fence at the bottom when the ground has just been graded.
Orchards turned into neighborhoods
Muscat grapes, then oranges, lemons, olives and walnuts, then avocados shaped Escondido's land for a century. Since the 1970s the city has lost most of its agricultural land to housing. Homes built on former grove ground sometimes have old irrigation lines, roots or terraces in the yard, which we deal with during grading before any seed goes down.
Creek and lagoon connection
Escondido Creek runs from Lake Wohlford through downtown and out through Harmony Grove to San Elijo Lagoon. It was turned into a concrete flood control channel in the 1960s. Sediment from bare yards and building pads ends up in that system, which is the reason silt fence and inlet protection matter on local construction sites.

Escondido Questions
Is it a bad idea to hydroseed in Escondido in June?
It can work, but it is the hardest month to start. Summer highs near 90 mean seed must be watered several times a day. Fall seeding is easier and usually more successful.
We bought a house on old avocado grove land. Does that change anything?
Sometimes. Old irrigation pipe, stumps and terraces can be buried in the yard. We find and clear them during grading so the lawn surface ends up smooth.
What do you put on a fill slope below a hillside home?
Usually pinned blankets or a sprayed BFM over a deep-rooted seed mix, plus fiber rolls or silt fence at the toe until it fills in.
Which grass handles Escondido heat best?
Warm-season grasses handle the heat best, while cool-season blends stay greener in winter. We go over the trade-off with you before ordering seed.
