Two Soils, One Hillside Town
Hydroseeding in Fallbrook means reading the soil before picking a mix. Two USDA soil series have their type locations about 2 miles south of town. The Fallbrook series is a well-drained sandy loam weathered from granitic rock, found on rolling hills with slopes of 5 to 75 percent and runoff that ranges from medium to very rapid. The Bonsall series, described right next to Fallbrook High School, has a sandy loam surface over a clay subsoil with 35 to 50 percent clay and very slow permeability.
Steep granitic hills
On Fallbrook series ground, the issue is runoff. Steep slopes and fast water strip seed and mulch off unless the surface is locked down. Grove hillsides and cut banks get BFM or pinned blankets, with fiber rolls on contour to break up flow.
Slow-draining clay pockets
In the gentler, concave spots where Bonsall-type soil sits, water soaks in slowly and can pond on top of the clay layer. Lawns there need short irrigation cycles, good surface grading and sometimes a drainage trench to carry water off. Overwatering a new seeding on that ground leads to soggy patches and weak roots.
Rain and frost
Fallbrook's 1991 to 2020 normals put annual precipitation at about 15.3 inches, with nearly all of it between November and April. The surrounding hills get up to 20 inches, compared with about 14 on the valley floor. Most of the community is frost-free, which is a big part of why it became the self-described Avocado Capital of the World and why seeding can happen almost any month with the right watering.
Oaks and fire edges
Native evergreen oaks form woodland in places like Live Oak Park, and chaparral covers the rest of the wild ground. The Rice Canyon Fire of October 2007 crossed Interstate 15 into eastern Fallbrook and burned 206 homes. Slopes along those brushy edges benefit from low-growing seeded cover that holds soil without adding tall fuel.

Fallbrook Questions
Water puddles on part of our yard for days. Can we still seed it?
Yes, after fixing drainage. Clay subsoil common around Fallbrook drains very slowly, so we regrade or add a trench before seeding.
What holds soil on a steep grove hillside?
A bonded fiber matrix or erosion control blanket, plus fiber rolls on contour to slow runoff.
We removed old avocado trees. Can the area become lawn?
Usually. We grind or pull stumps, regrade, add topsoil if needed and then hydroseed.
Since Fallbrook rarely frosts, can we seed in winter?
Yes. Winter seeding often works well here because rain helps with watering and frost is uncommon.
Do you seed near oak trees?
We can, but we keep heavy grading and frequent irrigation away from oak root zones, and often seed a low-water mix under the canopy.
