Seeding on a Rugged Coastal Terrace
Hydroseeding in Encinitas happens on what Wikipedia describes as a rugged coastal terrace. A low coastal ridge runs through the city and separates New and Old Encinitas, and elevations rise from sea level to about 402 feet. Batiquitos Lagoon forms the northern boundary and San Elijo Lagoon the southern one, so a good share of the city drains toward one lagoon or the other.
Bluff-top water is a real concern
The northern bluffs rise straight from the beach and can collapse onto the narrow sand below; a 2019 collapse killed three people. For bluff-top homes, how water leaves a yard matters as much as how green the lawn looks. We grade lawns to slope away from the bluff edge, route drainage toward the street or an approved outlet and avoid heavy irrigation close to the edge. Where grass is not appropriate, a low-water ground cover seeded with hydromulch is often a better choice.
Marine layer and the wet season
Winter and spring are the wet season and summer through fall is dry. January through March each bring roughly 2.4 to 2.7 inches of rain, while May through September stay under 0.3 inches a month. May gray and June gloom are common, and that cool, cloudy stretch is a forgiving time for young grass to get established if the seed went down in late winter or early spring.
Olivenhain acreage
German immigrants founded the Olivenhain colony in the late 1800s, and the area is now semi-rural, with mostly single-family homes and private equestrian facilities. Larger lots there bring different work: pasture reseeding, arena surrounds, long driveway shoulders and drainage swales that need erosion control blankets or hydromulch so they stop cutting deeper each winter.
Cobbly ground in places
The Olivenhain soil series, a very cobbly loam on dissected marine terraces, has about 25 percent cobblestones in its surface layer and very slow permeability. Where we hit that kind of ground, we screen or cap it with topsoil before seeding and keep irrigation in short cycles so water soaks in instead of running off.

Encinitas Questions
We live on the bluff. Is watering a lawn near the edge a problem?
It can be. We keep turf and heavy irrigation back from the edge, grade the yard to drain toward the street and use low-water cover near the bluff.
Can you reseed a horse pasture in Olivenhain?
Yes. Hydroseeding works well for pasture renovation, and we can add erosion control on swales and arena edges at the same time.
Our soil is full of rocks. Will hydroseed still take?
Seed needs a few inches of workable soil. We either screen out cobbles or spread topsoil over them before spraying.
Is late winter a good time to seed in Encinitas?
Yes. Late winter rain plus the cool, cloudy May gray period gives young grass an easy start.
