Yards That Help With Stormwater

Hydroseeding in National City gets more attention since January 22, 2024, when more than 4 inches of rain fell in a few hours and overwhelmed local stormwater systems. Low-lying neighborhoods took the worst of it. A lawn will not stop a storm like that, but bare dirt yards and construction sites send sediment into drains that are already stretched, and covered ground absorbs and slows water.

Two kinds of terrain

The western part of the city is flat, while the east side has canyons and ridges. On the west side, our work is mostly about grading yards to drain correctly and getting cover on bare soil. On the east side, canyon-edge lots need slope protection: hydromulch, bonded fiber matrix or blankets on the face and fiber rolls at the toe.

The Sweetwater River

The Sweetwater River flows from the Cuyamaca Mountains through National City and Chula Vista in a flood control channel before reaching San Diego Bay, and the northern part of the Sweetwater Marsh National Wildlife Refuge falls within city limits. Construction sediment that reaches the river or the bay affects protected habitat, so silt fence and inlet protection are standard on our site work here.

Dry most of the year

National City gets 9 to 13 inches of rain a year, mostly December to March, with almost nothing from May through September. The marine layer brings cool, damp air in May and June. We seed in fall or late winter when possible and make sure irrigation coverage is solid before spraying.

A city of planted trees

The Kimball brothers bought the whole Rancho de la Nacion in 1868, built the first roads and railroad, and imported and planted trees from Europe and Asia with the USDA. Many of those trees still stand. Older yards with large, established trees have shade and root competition, and we choose shade-tolerant seed and avoid deep grading inside the root zone.

National City Questions

Does seeding a bare yard really help with storm runoff?

It helps. Grass and mulch slow water and keep soil out of drains. Proper grading does the rest by sending water where it should go.

Our lot backs onto a canyon on the east side. What do you recommend?

Slope cover on the canyon face, usually hydromulch or a bonded fiber matrix, with fiber rolls at the bottom.

We have big old trees and grass will not grow under them.

We use shade-tolerant seed, keep grading shallow near roots and adjust watering. Some deep shade is better suited to ground cover.

Do small infill builds here need sediment control?

Yes, generally. We put in silt fence and protect the nearby inlets, then pull it all out once the site is stabilized.
